Physiotherapy Support - Rehabilitation Phase
Physiotherapy Support - Rehabilitation Phase
As the healed burn or graft matures scar formation occurs. This can restrict range markedly over the first three month period, and if ROM is not worked on daily, contractures can result that may require surgical release. The patient is responsible for exercise and stretching on his/her own but may require physiotherapy treatment during this period. Follow-up monitoring may be necessary until all areas are mature (i.e. pale in color).
Use any method that facilitates stretching:
- Contract-Relax exercises with overpressure (to a point where the area blanches) increase the range giving the sensation of movement which the patient can work at duplicating when at home.
- Wax (mixed 7:1 with mineral oil) is a very effective agent. As sensation is decreased over healed burn or grafted area, cool the wax and test on unburned areas before applying with a brush or by hand. DO NOT IMMERSE. Position the area to be stretched in maximum available range, apply wax and wrap for 10-15 minutes. Actively work on range following wax removal.
