Decison Making Guidelines
Based on the assessment findings, the following decisions must be made, whether to:
- transfer the patient to a more specialized facility, either immediately or as soon as possible
- resuscitate or not
- treat in-house or as an out-patient
Indications for Transport to Special Facility:(one or more of the following are present)
- 3rd degree burns greater than 5% BSA (any age)
- 2nd and 3rd degree burns greater than 10% BSA (patients under 10 and over 50 of age)
- 2nd and 3ird degree burns greater than 20% BSA (other groups)
- 3rd degree burns to face, hands, perineum, feet
- smoke inhtation injury requiring intubation (children to Childrens Hospital if available)
- high voltage electrical injury
- chemical burn with serious threat of function or cosmetic impairment
- circumferential burns of extremities and/or chest
- toxic epidermal necrolysis syndrome
- no local resources available
